Bessie Coleman was a pioneering figure in aviation, being the first black woman to receive a pilot's license.
Despite facing discrimination and being turned away by flying schools in the U.S., she persevered and learned French, which enabled her to study at France's Caudron Brother's School of Aviation.
Impressively, she completed her pilot's training in just seven months. In 1922, she made history by becoming the first black woman to perform a public flight in the United States.
