Dorothy Lawrence was a reporter who aspired to become a war correspondent at the outset of World War I. In 1915, she disguised herself as a man named "Tim" by wearing a corset to flatten her curves, cutting her hair, and forging travel documents to enter France and reach the front lines.
Upon arriving in Albert, France, she joined the 179 Tunnelling Company, 51st Division, Royal Engineers, which dug under neutral territory and towards German lines.
For two weeks, Lawrence worked alongside her male comrades before revealing her true identity to her superiors and emerging with a remarkable story.
Despite being forbidden by the War Office from sharing her experiences until after the Armistice in 1918, she eventually wrote a book titled "Sapper Dorothy Lawrence, The Only English Woman Soldier" based on her time in the trenches.
