Emilia Casanova de Villaverde was a renowned Cuban patriot who spent most of her life in New York City. As an ardent abolitionist and activist leader, she played a significant role in advocating for Cuba's independence from Spain during the latter half of the 19th century.
In response to the Ten Years' War, a Cuban rebellion against Spain that lasted from 1868 to 1878, she founded the first women's club called La Liga de las Hijas de Cuba. Its aim was to raise funds and provide support for the elderly, widows, and orphans who had sought refuge from the war in New York.
Casanova de Villaverde also spoke at the United States Congress about the situation in Cuba and personally sought the aid of President Ulysses S. Grant on several occasions.
