Florence Nightingale, who became known as "The Lady With the Lamp," started her nursing profession during the Crimean War and was driven to enhance healthcare.
Given her social status, taking any job, let alone a nursing job, was considered inappropriate for her, as she was expected to marry a wealthy man.
In 1860, she established the Nightingale Training School for Nurses and significantly enhanced healthcare sanitation procedures.
