Manuela Sáenz, the illegitimate daughter of a Spanish military officer and an Ecuadorian noblewoman, received a traditional education in a convent and learned how to ride and shoot.
She was married off to an English doctor when she was 17 and moved with him to Lima, Peru where she connected with revolutionaries who were interested in overthrowing the Spanish in Latin America.
After returning to Quito, Ecuador in 1822, she met the revolutionary leader Simón Bolívar and they fell in love.
Manuela joined Bolívar on campaign and went into battle with him in the cavalry, earning a promotion to colonel and the highest military honor in the revolutionary government, the Order of the Sun. She saved Bolívar's life from assassination at least twice.
After Bolívar's exile and death, Manuela lived the rest of her life in a small coastal village in Peru, making money by writing letters for sailors.
Her contributions to Latin America's independence were only recently recognised, and she was granted an Honorary General title in Ecuador in 2007.

- If the piece is visibly dirty or sticky, wash in lukewarm soap water and dry with a soft cloth
- Make sure to wash your jewellery at least once a year, most worn pieces should be washed at least twice a year
- Try to keep your jewellery away from salt water, sweat, high humidity, and chemicals
