Sylvia Rivera was a Venezuelan-Puerto Rican trans woman who played a significant role in advocating for trans rights during the gay rights movement.
Together with Marsha P. Johnson, she was one of the original activists who spoke up for trans people during the Stonewall uprising. In 1970, she founded the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR) organisation, which provided aid and shelter for trans youth in New York City.
She fought for transgender people to be included in New York’s Sexual Orientation Non-Discrimination Act, and the Sylvia Rivera Law Project was named in her honor to protect the rights of the LGBTQ+ community.
